Review – Mighty Goose (PS5)

We live in an age where electronics are becoming more and more accessible. Our smartphones, tablets, and laptops are all made to be operated with the one hand. The Mighty Goose is another example of this trend.

This week, we’re reviewing the Mighty Goose PS5, a new controller from Mighty Ape. This is a controller for the PlayStation 5, which is expected to be revealed in 2019.

Back in October we bought a PS5 on the strength of an early hands-on with the game shown at a press event. When the game arrived we were really pleased with the purchase, and once we had a limited amount of time with it, we wrote up the review. It’s the first time we’ve written a review this long-form and the first time we’ve reviewed a game on the PlayStation platform.

For some absurd reason, the gaming world has been in love with geese since the release of Untitled Goose Game. A game I enjoyed, but I think I’m the only person in the world who found it overrated and overrated….. And this from the person who founded the Wiseau Awards section for its love of rank stupidity in games. Well, it’s time for another goose to take the throne, but this time it’s someone who really deserves it. There’s a brand new silly game featuring a waterfowl that wants to take first place in everyone’s heart, and it’s called Mighty Goose. And yes, you should really try it. word-image-1631 My favorite unlikely video game hero of 2021. Want to hear the best (and dumbest) elevator speech in history? Why don’t you check out the Mighty Goose presentation? Imagine Metal Slug, but you’re driving a goose and heavy rock is playing in the background. This is literally the entire premise of this stupid game. It takes the drawing style, animations, and gameplay of SNK’s masterful action series, refines them a bit by adding brand new features, adds a new bird-like protagonist, and raises the framerate and pace to humanly impossible levels. God, this game is fast as hell. It’s totally awesome! When you charge Mighty Goose for the first time, there is a chance that you will die immediately after the second encounter with an enemy. Enemies constantly appear with powerful equipment, move like ninjas at a coffee party, shoot at you with extreme violence….. and it’s fun. Mighty Goose’s gameplay is so complex that it feels unfair at times, but once you get the hang of the game’s mechanics and pick up a weapon other than the dreaded gun you get at the beginning of the mission, it’s complete chaos. word-image-1632 You can drive a tank in certain areas. Bullets fly all over the screen and you can barely pay attention to what’s happening. Fortunately, once you get through the first mission, you have access to allies who can provide you with passive bonuses that will help you live much longer than if you tried to play this insane game alone. Plus, you can always collect coins and spend them on new weapons and vehicles: Pause the game, go to the store and order a new fur suit if you can afford it. The controls for the vehicles in Mighty Goose are exactly the same as in Metal Slug. They give you extra hit points, have infinite ammo, and can easily outflank enemies, though it’s a pretty risky move. I really liked that the game allows you to order one if you can afford it, during each part of each level. Since there’s always a wide variety of enemies to kill in the game, there won’t be any time when adding a mecha suit won’t be welcome. Not to mention the fact that you goose for no apparent reason to wear sunglasses while driving these vehicles. Have I mentioned how stupid this game is and how much I like it for its stupidity? word-image-1633 Man, that goose looks so cool in a mechsuit with sunglasses….. There are only two things that I think could be improved to enhance the overall experience. First, while I love the insane action, there are times when the pace is too fast and chaotic. Sometimes you die without realizing what happened to you. I feel like the graphics could have been tweaked a bit more to improve the overall visibility of the game without sacrificing the overall pace. Another element that could improve the gameplay tenfold is aiming with two joysticks. I get it, this game is literally Metal Slug with a goose. I know this game didn’t have support for both sticks, but I really don’t think that extra control would have hurt. On the contrary, it would allow me to get crazier during my runs. word-image-1634 First boss fight. This is complete madness. The Mighty Goose is completely and utterly ridiculous. This is one of the craziest games I’ve played in a long time. It’s also one of the most exciting games of recent years. There are times when you barely pay attention to what’s happening on screen, while bullets and enemies fly around at a million trillion frames per second. And that’s why I liked it so much. It’s fast, energetic, incredibly challenging in places, and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. Move over, we have a new waterfowl king in town.

The Mighty Goose game has some nice retro-style sprites, but the frame rate is so chaotic that you can barely see what’s happening on the screen at any given moment. Depending on the situation, this can be both confusing and annoying. The game has simple controls, similar to Metal Slug, but I think it would be totally perfect if it had support for two-handed aiming.
Fast-paced electro rock that gets the adrenaline pumping as much as the rest of the game. And yes, the goose can growl. The Mighty Goose is completely and utterly ridiculous and moves incredibly fast, so you can barely see what’s happening on screen. But I can’t lie, I got a huge kick out of how stupid and complicated it is.
Final decision: 8.5

Mighty Goose is already available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC and Switch. Tested on PS5. A copy of Mighty Goose was provided by the publisher.

In a day and age where the only way to enjoy a video game is through some sort of controller, the Mighty Goose is a gamepad that’s designed to look like a real controller.
