The Best Swords in FFXII: The Zodiac Age (And How To Get Them)

Zodiac signs are one of the most widely celebrated concepts of modern culture. Throughout history, most societies have closely monitored and believed in the concept of human personality based upon the movement of celestial objects through space. Astrology has had a long history of popularity, despite being an ancient concept that is rooted in the stars.

To be born under the sign of a certain zodiac sign, or zodiac age, is to be blessed with certain characteristics, including attributes and abilities, that are unique to that age. In essence, the zodiac signs are a constellation of characteristics that can be found across the human population, but that are only unique to one age of a person’s life. The full zodiac sign is known as the Sun sign, which is based on the astrological year the person was born. (For example, if a person was born in 2016, his/her Sun sign is Aries.)

Final Fantasy games are known for their exotic weapons with interesting effects.

The FF12 is no exception.

The licensing system gives you a lot of leeway when choosing your weapon. And in this case, you have to be careful with the swords.

So in this article, we will rank the best one-handed swords you can buy.

Also remember that you can use a shield with any of these top weapons.

10. Icebrand

Let’s start with one of the less impressive swords. Icebrand has a decent 55 attack and a weak dodge skill. The special thing about Icebrand is the ice element effect it carries. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s great. This item can also be obtained fairly early in the game.

Permit requirements : Swords 5.

How to get it: 1% to 5% of Zombie Warrior, depending on chain level. Also found in a chest in the Zeviah Span area in the Barheim passage.

9. Diamond sword

The Diamond Sword is a weapon in the middle game with a 73 attack and little evasion. However, this sword has no special effect or elemental damage. But the increase in offensive power certainly makes it a worthy improvement over IJsbrand.

Permit requirements : Swords 7
How to get there: Located in the Cayma Hills neighborhood of Von Coast. Also located in the Garden of Life County area of the Chita Highlands. You can also buy it on Archades for only 10 600 gil.

8. Runeblade

The attack power of the rune sword is now 78, with a small chance of dodging. This is a standard upgrade. If you have multiple swordsmen in your party, a Runoblade can be a good way to fill that equipment slot.

Permit requirements : Swords 7
How to get there: Sold in the arcades and port of Balfonheim for 12,100 gil. It also occurs in the Uazkuf Hills region of the Chita Highlands.

7. Stoneblade

Stoneblade is the next level of attack enhancement for our one-handed swords. And this one has a powerful 95 attack and also some evasion ability. This is one of the last relatively easy to find weapons on this list. It is also a powerful tracking weapon and a big improvement over Runeblade.

Conclusion: It’s worth buying.

Permit requirements : Swords 8
How to get there: It is located in the terrace area of the Serobi steppe. Also available at the Bazaar or the Hunter’s Club.

6. Deathbringer

This sword is slightly weaker than Stoneblade, with an attack of 83, but it has a great special effect. One of the reasons the Deathbringer is ranked higher than other, more powerful assault weapons is its ability to deliver a knockout effect on a hit. The odds are only 12%. But it can still be incredibly useful for taking out large groups of enemies. This is the first of the more unique weapons in the game, although it is fairly easy to obtain.

Permit requirements : Swords 8
How to get there: Found in the Mind’s Edge neighborhood of Faywood. It is also available at the port of Balfonheim for 13,700 gil. We also buy it at the bazaar.

5. Karkata

This beautiful red weapon is an improved version of the Blood Sword. It has an excellent attack of 92, and its evasion ability is higher than previous swords by 16. The obvious reason to look for this knife is the effect it has when touched. Karkata is 100% capable of confusing his opponents. This is a great effect for any weapon and certainly makes for interesting fights. Normally, in FF12, physical attacks cause enemies to become confused. But Karkata can continue to weaken.

Permit requirements : Karkata (yes, it has its own license)
How to get there: Unlocked with the Crimson Blade or Bazaar item.

4. Durandal

Don’t let the size fool you. Durandal is still a one-handed sword… somehow. With a strong 99 attack and little evasion, this weapon is quite powerful. The improved version of this weapon is the Simha, which is of the same model (and which we will see next on our list). Durandal is not the easiest weapon to get. But it’s definitely one of the most powerful weapons in the game.

Permit requirements : Swords 9
How to get there: It is located in the terrace area of the Serobi steppe. Velelu also fails with a 1% probability.

3. Simha

As Durandal’s stronger brother, Simha has an attack value of 103 and a much higher dodge value of 15. The combo factor of this weapon is also higher than most, at 10%. Simha is definitely a very powerful weapon, and it’s slightly easier to get than its predecessor. You don’t have to rely on luck to get the precious sword.

Permit requirements: Swords 9
How to get there: The only way to buy Simha is through the bazaar system. It may not be easy because the requirements for the Well Forged Sword item are very high, but they are worth it.

2. Kumbha

Wait, how does the katana get on this list of one-handed swords? Kumbha is after all a one-handed sword! This elite weapon is an enhanced version of the mythical Masamune. He has an incredible attack power of 117 and a huge combo rate of 35%. Kumbha is one of the most powerful one-handed swords in the entire game. It’s definitely worth tracking down in the bazaar.

Permit requirements: Kumbha
How to get there: This is still a rather difficult item to obtain for the bazaar. Master-crafted Blade is the item you need to unlock.

1. Great Trango

The Grand Trango is one of the coolest and rarest weapons in the entire game. It is also the most powerful one-handed sword and the second most combative. This rare weapon has an insane attack power of 153 and a combo rate of 30%. It penetrates most other weapons with ease. Moreover, it is said that the design of this weapon was so amazing and sophisticated that it was not allowed to be displayed in public. For that reason, there is no model in play. It seems that the mark attacks with an invisible sword.

Permit requirements: No (yes, really)
How to get there: First of all: Good luck! You can steal this weapon from a Zodiarc with a 1 in 3 chance, or with a 1 in 6 chance if you have the thief’s weapon.

Another possibility of finding the Great Trango is in the southern area of the Abyss in Subterra. The desired box has a 2% chance of appearing and a 20% chance of containing the object. If you go this route, you have a 5% chance of getting a Grand Trango (assuming you have diamond armor, of course).

Where is the Zodiac Clean age?

When it comes to the Zodiac Age, too often people assume it’s a set time in which the player should reach a certain level, and the only way to do this is to grind. While it’s true that grinding does help, it’s not the only factor. It’s also important to consider the other parts of the game, such as the grinding requirements for the next Zodiac Age, and the Zodiac equipment and guilds that you get early on. The Zodiac Age is the name of a future time period that acts as a sort of cosmic reset button for Final Fantasy XII. You’ll have to play the game to understand what I’m talking about, but there’s a lot of fun to be had with the Zodiac Age’s concept, so let’s dive in. “What is the Zodiac Age?” For a long time, Final Fantasy XII’s main protagonist just happened to be a young man. It was a sequel to Final Fantasy 12, previously released in 2006 which itself was the last game in the series to feature characters from the series’ original Japanese releases. The new game was meant to release in 2010, but after it’s announcement, fans noticed a few glaring omissions regarding the game.  These omissions were the game’s first time limit of turn-based combat, only being able to party from one particular age, and a hard requirement to have a “Weapon Triangle” for each character. Fans began to call this game “The Zodiac Age”, and began to speculate on a release date.
