As a huge fan of Paw Patrol , I was excited to see that a movie was made, and I was even happier to see that it was about the Paw Patrol team. However, I was not expecting an entire city to be revealed, which meant that a whole lot of new characters were introduced.

To the pleasure of every four-year-old in the world, Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls is the second Paw Patrol game to be published in less than a year. We may not be concerned, but it’s great to see a game targeted for young children that doesn’t treat them like brainless sheep, like Race With Ryan did a few years ago. I just reviewed Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay and found it to be OK… for what it was. All I want of this game is that it follow my lead.

I’m looking for a place to purchase a dog drill suit. I’m looking for a companion.

In a nutshell, Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls (supposedly based on a movie I’m not going to pretend I know anything about) is the same as last year’s installment. In reality, it’s quite similar to last year’s performance. As in, it’s nearly the same game, except it’s a little worse in every way. Not in a “oh shoot, there’s a Paw Patrol movie coming soon, so come up with something fast so we can release it as a tie-in” sort of manner, but in a “oh shoot, there’s a Paw Patrol movie coming soon, so come up with something quick so we can release it as a tie-in” kind of way. Whereas Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay felt polished and professional despite its simplicity, Adventure City Calls seems hurried. It seems like the ideal example of a game that might have been a lot better if the publisher had waited a month to release it.

In certain sections of the game, there are Nintendo 64-style levels with poor texture quality.

With the exception of the awful (and frequent) voice acting, nothing about it is bad. It has the same level layout and gameplay cycle as the original. Each level offers you two puppies to play as (and you can play couch co-op with a buddy), and you must navigate a ridiculously linear pseudo-platforming part while collecting a ridiculous amount of dog treats. Plus the odd “mystery” that may be solved by using the correct pup to hit the context-sensitive action button. There are also occasional vehicle portions when you’re instructed to gather even more goodies, as well as a number of unlocked minigames that you may access from the main menu at any time. For adults, it’s as stupid as hell, but for kids, it’s a great introduction to platforming and puzzle-solving, with some pleasant songs to cheer them up.

Sorry, child, but your voice acting makes me enraged.

The issue is that the lack of polish oozes from every pore in Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls. For a game that doesn’t really push any graphics limits or need a lot of storage space (it’s just 5GB), the loading times are absurdly lengthy. The graphics are much less detailed than those in its predecessor, with certain places having the sort of textural quality you’d expect from running a AAA game on a machine with sub-minimal settings.

While playing the game, you’ll notice a number of graphical and AI flaws, with the former being particularly apparent when you pick a mission and witness the titular puppies’ textures glitching in a borderline ludicrous way during the pre-loading sequence. Will it be of interest to children? It’s something I really doubt. I’d be surprised if the game’s intended demographic is even aware of the term “texture.” However, this does not excuse us from addressing these issues, which are visible throughout the game.

I’d despise living in a community where a dog outperforms the real firemen. Also, have a look at the texturing of the firetruck. Oof.

Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls, like its predecessor, is not a game for us cranky grownups, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore its flaws. Especially when compared to the last Paw Patrol game, which was published less than a year ago and looked and felt more finished. It’s still OK for little children, since it still handles well and has several simple but diverse minigames strewn throughout its duration, but if you absolutely have to, Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay is a better choice.

Despite appearing nearly similar to Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay from last year, the graphics in this game seem to be somewhat worse. There are also a few of graphical flaws to be aware of. There isn’t a single flaw with the controls or gameplay. They’re simple as shallow as a puddle, yet they’re responsive and the game plays at 60 frames per second. It’s ideal for children.
The main menu title tune, in particular, is one of the soundtrack’s most memorable tracks. With that said, the voice acting is appalling. Paw Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls is pretty similar to the Paw Patrol game from last year, although it seemed a little more polished.
Final Score: 6.5

Paw Patrol: Adventure City Calls is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

On the Xbox One, the game was reviewed.

Paw Patrol is available for purchase. The publisher supplied the film Adventure City Calls.
