Killing Dragons For 35 Years – Nintendo Times Radio 141

Killing Dragons

It’s been 35 years since the release of one of the most influential computer games of all time: The Temple of Apshai Trilogy. The game was a hit with gamers, and they kept going back to it for years. The Temple of Apshai Trilogy helped define the role-playing genre, and it was a major influence on the Gauntlet series. It even spawned a trilogy of sequels, Temple of Apshai: Schartung Zug, Temple of Apshai: The Citadels of Time, and Temple of Apshai: The Last Revelation.

Ever since the first 8-bit hero made a name for himself by killing a dragon, the act of hacking and slashing one’s way through a dungeon full of the armored fire-breathing lizards has been a mainstay of the gaming industry. The fact that the dragon has been around for so long, and is a part of so many genres, has made it a perfect candidate for a topic in the History of Gaming series.
