Undying Moon Early Access Impressions

Undying Moon Early Access Impressions

Undying Moon is a sandbox MMORPG that doesn’t take itself seriously. Instead of adventuring across the realms of Earth, Undying Moon has you travel across the realms of Moon, fighting Moon monsters, harvesting Moon plants, and crafting Moon Items.

I’ve been playing the early access version of Undying Moon since it hit Steam yesterday, and I absolutely love it. The gameplay is simple, yet compelling. It’s a bit like a mashup of a side-scrolling beat’em up a game like Streets of Rage and a platformer such as Super Meat Boy. As a member of the elite Lunar Guard, you’re tasked with rescuing the King’s daughter from the clutches of Onyx, an evil goddess. On your quest, you’ll have to contend with a variety of evil creatures, solve puzzles, and make it through a number of levels before facing Onyx herself.

The Early Access version of Undying Moon has been out for a few weeks now, which means you’ve had a chance to try out the game’s basics. But it also means that development is still ongoing, and many of the game’s features are still being tweaked. It’s important to keep that in mind if you’re considering buying the game—after all, you could end up enjoying the game as it is now, then feels like there’s little to look forward to in the future if the developers don’t deliver on their ambitious promises.

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon was introduced without much hype as one of Nintendo’s independent releases. And even then, it was only during a commercial, showing only three seconds of video before moving on to the next game. I was quite surprised: a brand new Konami game labeled as an indie that has barely received any promotional time? One second of the game’s presentation was enough to pique my interest, and I scoured the internet for a corresponding trailer, and how blown away I was. The surprisingly long trailer showed the game as a fast-paced action-platformer with an ukiyo-e art style and a soundtrack of heavy metal and shamisen. There were tons of different Yokai to kill and more blood than the average fight with Scarlet in Mortal Kombat 11. It ended with the announcement that the game will be released on Switch in 2022 and on PC in 2021….. Early access status. I’m not going to lie, reading the word Early Access made me sigh a little frustrated, but I still wanted to take a look at everything that was ready in the game’s build. And I’m glad I did because surprisingly enough, GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is fantastic.

Every screenshot you take in this game can be framed as a work of art. If you have virtually no idea what this game is because it was barely shown in this Direct, I don’t blame you. Fortunately, I’m here to help you. GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is a soft reboot/sixth part of a Famicom game I had never heard of before reading about it on Wikipedia. A cult success that would become one of the founding fathers of the Metroidvania genre. However, this sequel is best described as a mix of Metroidvania and Roguelite. In fact, this game could even be considered very similar to Dead Cells, and that’s not a bad thing at all. The level design (random) and combat reminded me of Dead Cells: Move through the procedurally generated Metroidvania map, collecting new weapons and upgrades until you find the final boss at the end. Chances are it won’t work out the first time, because your stats are worthless, your weapons haven’t been upgraded yet, etc. Fortunately, the fact that it’s a roguelite (and not a roguelike) means that you can save some crafting items and upgrade your offensive skills between races or after death. And you’ll die a lot.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful and serene world of lifting? The combat is excellent, lightning-fast, but with a high learning curve. The game has some obvious influences from Dark Souls, including the dodging mechanics (translated to 2D, of course), and the limited number of healing items you get at the start of each new game. There are many types of weapons in the game, both primary (mostly mêlée weapons like swords, clubs, or even umbrellas) and secondary (bows and such). What I like most about this game is blatantly obvious: the art style. GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is just breathtakingly beautiful. This is a moving ukiyo-e painting, and for those who don’t know what that means, imagine the Great Gulf of Kanagawa in playful form, with lots of enemies, blood, and guts. The game runs surprisingly well on less powerful hardware, so I assume the minimum system requirements listed on the game’s Steam page are greatly exaggerated. Plus, the game looks as good as it sounds. It’s not as metallic as the trailer suggests, but it’s also awash in shimmying shimmying. However, things get much more difficult in the boss fights.

word-image-2545 You may be fragile, but your weapon is capable of striking. GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is still in early access, which means the developers are still working on new levels and bosses, as well as feedback from the community. There’s one thing I hope they straighten out later: While I like the combat in the game, the progression system is very slow and demotivating. It takes a lot of resources to upgrade your character, and given the combination of the game’s difficulty and the low percentage of items that appear, you’ll have to play several full games before you have enough materials to upgrade your character. I really hope Konami and GuruGuru are listening to the community’s complaints about this because they’re posting almost in unison.

word-image-2546 Be careful, it’s the first boss. Despite the fact that I expected to enjoy GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon from the little I got to see in the trailer, I didn’t expect to like the fighting and overall design. If the developers manage to fix the clunky progression system and add a few more areas and enemies before the 1.0 release, I’m not exaggerating when I say this could very well be one of the best games of 2022.   Early access code for GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon was provided by the publisher.

Publisher Snail Games is no stranger to Early Access on Steam. While last year’s Tower of Guns was their first Early Access smash hit, there’s no denying that it was their second—Undying—that put them on the map as a publisher worth keeping an eye on. Having recently rebranded themselves as Snail Games USA, it feels like the company is poised to become a major player in the Western market, and I can’t wait to see how they do it..
