The next big thing from Microsoft is Windows 11. If you’ve been following Windows apps and the Windows Insider program, you know that the company is doing its best to get Windows 10 ready for the mainstream. The first public preview of the operating system is coming this week, and is available to everyone with the necessary insider-level access.

Yesterday, Microsoft released the very first version of Windows 11 Insider Preview. Windows 11 Release 22000.51 is now available to Insiders in the Dev channel, bringing with it the new design and features. However, since this is an early version, not all claimed features are available in the current version of Windows 11.

Microsoft says Insiders won’t be able to see all the new features unveiled last week right away, as this is a preliminary release. Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc of the Windows development team made the following comments.

As the product is completed over the next few months, we will contact you to make sure everything is working properly. You can try out many, but not all, of the new features we introduced last week in this early preview. In the coming months, we’ll be adding new features, like Chat with Microsoft Teams and Android apps, to the Microsoft Store as they become available – we’re just at the beginning of this journey together!

Here are some of the major new features of Windows 11 version 22000.51.

Beautiful, cool and calm images and sounds

From the rounded corners to the centering of content to the new animations, the new visual design can be found in many areas of Windows 11.

Widgets

Widgets bring you closer to the right and useful information. Click on the Widgets icon in the taskbar, swipe left with the touch controls, or press WIN + W on your keyboard to have your widgets swiped left on your desktop. You can customize your experience by adding or removing widgets, changing their position, resizing them, and adjusting their content.

The set of widgets we currently offer includes a calendar, weather, local traffic, Microsoft to-do lists, OneDrive photos, sports and games, a stock watchlist, and tips.

Multitasking

Boost your productivity and creativity with these new multitasking features:

  • Bindery layout
  • Connection groups
  • Desktop computer

New Microsoft Store

With today’s release, you can try a preview of the new Microsoft Store. We will continue to develop and improve the shop. This version presents the brand new design of the store for the first time. In the coming months we will add more features described in the blog post published last week by Giorgio Sardo, CEO of Microsoft Store.

Windows 11 Docking

When you unlock the laptop, the windows of the external monitor are minimized. When you reconnect the computer to the monitor, Windows will restore everything as it was! The settings for these functions can be found under System > Display > Multiple monitors.

Windows 11 Settings

We’ve designed the settings to look great, be easy to use, and integrate all your Microsoft features into Windows 11. Settings has navigation on the left that is saved between pages, and we’ve added breadcrumb paths as you go deeper into settings so you know where you are and don’t lose track.

The settings pages are also completely new, with new controls at the top that highlight important information and commonly used settings that can be adjusted as needed. These new commands include several category pages, such as System, Bluetooth and Devices, Network and Internet, Personalization, Accounts, and Windows Update. We’ve also added expandable fields for pages with more customization options.
