E3 2021 Preview – To the Rescue!

E3 is a lot tougher than people think. This year, the conference is taking place in Los Angeles, California, and the conference is now two days long! (E3 used to be one day, but that extra day proved challenging for everyone.)

The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, is next month, and as usual, it’s going to be packed with the latest trailers, game announcements, and hardware leaks. But, as usual, there’s always something new waiting to drop at this game show. With the announcement of the company’s next-generation console expected soon, and the PS5 expected to launch well before the following E3, Sony is going all-in with the PS6. The only question now is when will it be revealed.

From the looks of it, we’re in for quite a treat at E3 next year. The event takes place this year from June 9 through June 12. The days leading up to E3 will be packed with news and speculation over what the big E3 news might be: Halo, Gears, God of War, Crackdown, Anthem, and a whole lot more. We won’t know for sure until the week before, but expect the gaming world to go pretty wild when they announce their upcoming games and projects.

There are numerous business simulators on the market, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a shelter simulator. That’s what independent developer Little Rock Games offers in its first game, Help! I had the pleasure of speaking with Olivia Dunlap, lead developer at Little Rock Games, to find out what this game is all about. In To the Rescue! you play as the main character of your choice, who has just moved to a new city with his or her pet, which you can also choose from various options. Immediately, you discover a stray puppy in the neighborhood that you need to adopt and find a home for (interestingly, this story is based on a true story of Olivia and her partner). This will lead to a job at a local animal shelter where you will be responsible for managing the facility and the animals in it.

This is what the basic equipment of your shelter could look like. The realism is surprisingly good when it comes to the tasks you have to perform to manage your stock. They have to build kennels to house the animals, make sure they are well fed with their favorite food, play with them and show them love to make them happy and thus facilitate adoption, expand the facility when it starts to get too crowded, keep them clean, etc.

Much thought has gone into the internal workings of the shelter. However, there is one aspect that might discourage some players. The game To the Rescue! has euthanasia mechanisms. Before any of you get upset about this, let me explain why. The Little Rock Games team wants to make people aware of what goes on in animal shelters. Yes, you spend time learning about and caring for animals, but there is another side.

There is a wide range of management issues. Unfortunately, many shelters are overcrowded or the animals are so traumatized that they are not suitable for adoption. For many animals, this is a sad reality, and they didn’t want to pretend it didn’t exist. They have decided not to shy away from the problems that many shelters are facing. Instead, they want to take the opportunity to tell people what it’s like to run an orphanage and hopefully encourage more people to adopt. Personally, I applaud their decision to take this approach. There is an option to disable this mechanism if someone finds it too complicated.

Successfully adopting a pet is a rewarding experience. This brings me to what I think is the best part of this track. Little Rock Games has not only created an adorable game with amazingly realistic elements, but they are also donating 20% of the profits to Petfinder. For those who don’t know: Petfinder is an online adoption website that has helped millions of pets find new homes. This is my favorite aspect of On the Help! because the goal is to raise awareness and make a real difference in the world. That alone makes the purchase worthwhile, and the fact that the game is fun is just an added bonus. To the Rescue! will be available to play in the fall of 2021.

Last year, Ubisoft’s conference at E3 was a huge hit with me. I wasn’t expecting this year to be any different, but I was surprised at the strength of their presentation. With no major gameplay reveal, the conference just consisted of a short trailer, but it was packed with interesting ideas and some funny little jokes..
