Today we’ll look at an AMD RX 6600 XT graphics-based add-in-board partner card. XFX was the first company to contact us about testing a video card. We also have an MSI video card that came shortly before the launch. This is already a positive indicator, indicating that the Radeon RX 6600 XT video card would be more widely available than prior GPUs in this generation.
The XFX SPEEDSTER MERC 308 Radeon RX 6600 XT Black Edition video card, which is XFX’s top-of-the-line, highest SKU, will be the subject of today’s review. The finest of XFX’s Radeon RX 6600 XT range is represented by this video card. We’re eager to get our hands on it and see how it runs and overclocks. If you haven’t already, have a look at our Radeon RX 6600 XT Introduction post, where we go over all of the new GPU’s specs. We won’t rehash everything here; instead, read that page to learn more about the Radeon RX 6600 XT’s features and specifications.
MERC 308 RX 6600 XT Black XFX SPEEDSTER
The XFX Speedster MERC 308 AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT Black Gaming Graphics Card with 8GB GDDR6, AMD RDNA 2 is the official name of the video card we’re examining today. XFX also provides a brief description of the video card: XFX SPEEDSTER MERC308 RADEON RX 6600 XT BLACK Gaming Graphics Card. Even so, that’s still quite a lengthy sentence. RX-66XT8TBDQ and RX-66XT8T are the official Model Numbers/Part Numbers. XFX SPEEDSTER MERC308 RADEON RX 6600 XT BLACK 8G D6 HDMI 3xDP is another name for the video card. Basically, the naming is broken down as follows.
XFX offers three different tiers of Radeon RX 6600 XT GPU-based video cards, although the naming conventions may be confusing at first. Let’s start with the naming system and how it works. The SPEEDSTER Line is the moniker given to all of these video cards, thus if you see Speedster before the product name, it simply indicates that it belongs to XFX’s Speedster series of video cards. You may exclude it since it isn’t very descriptive. The next piece of information is the name of the Edition. The MERC 308 Black Edition, QICK 308 Black Edition, and SWFT 210 Core Edition will all be available through XFX. This is how the main differences between the three graphics cards will be identified.
XFX’s basic model for the Radeon RX 6600 XT will be the SWFT 210 Core Gaming video card. It’ll be tuned at AMD standard clock rates, have a dual-fan architecture, and cost $379. The QICK 308 Black Gaming video card is next on the list. This one comes with a factory overclock, a triple-fan design, and a $399 MSRP. Finally, the MERC 308 Black Gaming video card is at the top of the SKU. It features the same factory overclock and triple-fan architecture as the QICK version, but adds LED lights and a silver trim aesthetic flare, as well as a higher MSRP of approximately $409-$419.
The QICK 308 and MERC 308 are almost identical, with the exception that the MERC adds LED illumination and a silver trim aesthetic flare. The flare has been removed from the QICK 308, leaving just a black shroud. Essentially, if you want the specifications of the MERC 308, but can’t get your hands on one, the QICK will provide the identical specs, but without the LED lights and flair. If one or the other isn’t accessible, it should offer you additional choices.
Specs for the XFX MERC 308 Black Radeon RX 6600 XT
The MERC 308 Black Edition is the subject of this review. It can overclock to 2428MHz game clock and 2607MHz boost clock from the manufacturer. This compares to a game clock of 2359MHz and a boost clock of 2589MHz in the reference game. As a result, the game clock is increased by 69MHz, while the boost clock is increased by 18MHz. The clock speed is dynamic, and we’ll see what it is in this review. Aside than that, it features the usual 8GB of 16GHz GDDR6 on board. According to XFX, the GPU TDP on this video card is 145W.
The XFX MERC 308 Radeon RX 6600 XT Black video card has a length of 10.79 inches, a width of 4.49 inches, and a height of 1.97 inches. It’s referred to as a 2.5 slot card profile. The Power Supply Minimum Requirement is 650W.
XFX’s Ghost Thermal Design is used on this video card. This video card has a triple-fan design, as well as a heatsink and shroud that extends beyond the length of the PCB. It has nine 80mm high-efficiency sleeve fans with nine blades each. It has a strong cast aluminum backplate that provides stiffness to the card and is highly vented to avoid heat trapping. To keep the video card cool, it has a passthrough exhaust architecture that allows air to pass through the heatsink and heat pipes.
The video card’s BIOS thermal fan profile performance has been customized. The Junction Temperature fan target is the main deciding factor in fan speed in the default fan profile. The fan’s Junction Temperature is set at 89°C, and the fan speed is set to 1200RPM for silent operation. If the Junction Temp goes over 89°C, the fans’ RPMs will increase, but if it stays below 89°C, the fans’ RPMs will decrease.
The GPU and RAM are cooled by an aluminum heatsink with a nickel-plated copper cold plate. Direct contact with the cold plate is made via four 6mm nickel-plated copper heat pipes.
Custom hardware components and a PCB with a completely digital PWM delivery mechanism are used by XFX. The video card is designed with a 62-phase power supply, and the default BIOS provides 145W of electricity. One standard 8-pin PCI-Express power connection is required. A BIOS switch is located next to the power connection, since this video card supports dual-BIOS. The BIOS is the same in both orientations right now, however this is a wonderful safety precaution.
Three DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC and one HDMI 2.1 with VRR and FRL are available onboard.
On the top of the video card, the MERC 308 Black Edition has an LED XFX logo and Radeon branding. It’s beautiful and sharp, but it’s simply an LED with no RGB capabilities.
