When Microsoft announced Windows 10 , a lot of people wondered if they would be able to install the OS on their existing Windows devices. The answer is yes. If you have a compatible device, you can upgrade to Windows 10 by simply downloading the ISO file and performing a clean installation.

The development cycle for Windows 10 has been taking longer than expected, but the result is a pretty great operating system. With great new versions of apps and features and an updated Windows Store, the major downside is that Windows 10 is currently lacking a few features, namely a proper ISO download. This week, Microsoft has opened up access to the Windows Insider Fast ring, allowing clean installations of Windows 10 with all its new features, and the ISO has been made available to download.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft released a new Desktop Experience update for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7, which makes the operating system much more consistent across devices. This update brings the Start menu back to the desktop, and brings the Edge browser, Cortana, and the Windows Store to the Start menu for all users, even if they’re on a touch device. But it also reverts the Start menu back to the Windows 7 Start menu layout, which is something that a lot of people feel isn’t as user-friendly. So, is the new Start menu on Windows 10 really better for you?

Windows users have been able to test drive Windows 11 for weeks now, owing to a variety of preview versions that have been available since the operating system’s June launch. However, for Windows enthusiasts who would rather start over than upgrade from Windows 10, the procedure has gotten more intriguing.

Windows 11 ISOs are now available for anyone who want to sample Microsoft’s newest insider preview build, version 22000.160, Microsoft said yesterday. The ISOs enable Windows users to do a clean installation of the new operating system rather than an in-place upgrade, which should be useful for people who want to test how the Windows 11 setup process works on a brand-new machine.

The new Windows 11 setup process (commonly referred to as the “out of box experience” or OOBE for short) is intended to create enthusiasm for Windows 11 right from the minute you switch on a new Windows 11 PC for the first time, according to Microsoft.

“We’ve also introduced the option to name your PC throughout the setup process, based on your input. The Get Started app is a new first-run experience tool that will help you rapidly get established on a new PC once you’ve completed the setup process. Please give them a try and let us know what you think!”

Windows users who haven’t signed up for Microsoft’s Windows Insider program yet can easily do so by visiting the Windows Insider Program section under Settings > Update & Security or heading to Microsoft’s Windows Insider site for registration.

Among the changes and fixes in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.160 are a new clock app for the operating system, the ability to see estimates for how long a restart might take after an update in select areas of the OS (e.g., the power menu under Start), and the Taskbar no longer showing the “location in use” icon when it shouldn’t.
