The Youtube-driven world of gaming is a fascinating phenomenon. The fact that anyone with a camera can upload videos of themselves or their buddies playing games of varying skill levels has inspired some of the most creative and entertaining shows on television. Though the best Youtube channels have more than one or three videos, these are the ones I can recommend to stay on the cutting edge of the gaming scene.
There is a misconception that true gamers are those who can punish their eyes by staring at a TV screen for hours on end, but the truth is those gamers are nothing short of the most dedicated, passionate, and knowledgeable people you’ll ever meet. You might think that a gamer has to have a lot of free time and money to dedicate to gaming, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. What these guys do on a daily basis is simply amazing.
For this sub, I thought I’d create a list of some of the finest serious gaming-related Youtube channels. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
Noclip is one of the most popular gaming-related YouTube channels. They create real game papers, all of which are crowdfunded. They contain interviews and other in-depth material.
Another outstanding feature is the game maker’s toolset. They really go into the details.
GDC has a lot of information! It’s highly professional-oriented, so a layman like myself may be a little confused with parts of the content, but even non-professional game developers will find a lot of fascinating information.
Raycevick is a fantastic channel for more review-oriented channels that suit the subject of this sub. He hardly uploads once in a while, but when he does, it’s nearly always gold.
The one and only Joseph Anderson, of course. He produces very lengthy videos in which he dissects whatever game he’s discussing. I don’t agree with him on a lot of things when it comes to videogames, but I like the job he does.
The Zero Punctuation channel is a more relaxed one to follow. It’s more of a joke than true hardcore assessments, but if you watch other Escapist material, you’ll quickly realize that Yahtzee, who performs Zero Punctuation, is a very astute videogame critic, and even the ZP reviews are really well done. On that channel, there’s a podcast that’s really worth listening to.
Total Biscuit is another furious Brit I suggest checking out. Unfortunately, he died of cancer, therefore there will be no more material on that channel.
Bellular News is another excellent station to follow if you’re traveling north from England. They provide excellent gaming news. They’ve recently shifted to the oversaturated 10-to-20-minute video on a single subject genre. They used to just provide extremely brief news summaries. They’re still extremely good in their current style; but, if you’re into gaming on YouTube at all, it may become tedious. They mainly discuss the development process rather than the games themselves.
Those were the most in-depth channels that sprang to mind. There are a couple more good channels, but they mainly deal with clickbait “top 10 games that…” garbage. I’d recommend checking out the first three channels; the following three are more blah, but they do sometimes hit gold and are generally well-written. If you’re feeling adventurous, give them a shot.
Outsidexbox is a group of YouTubers from the United Kingdom. They produce a lot of gaming-related material and have a great and hilarious chemistry together. What is it with British trios and their amusing chemistry?
Thescore Esports is another option. This is the place to be if you’re into the professional competitive gaming scene. They’ve got CSGO, DOTA2, LOL, and R6 covered.
One of the best “top ten” clickbait channels is Gamerranx. There is a lot of excellent work being done there. It’s not as interesting as some of my previous channels, but it’s usually nice lighthearted fun. They have their fair share of hits and misses.
On a side note, IGN’s series of game creators responding to speedruns of their games was really brilliant.
