Yu-Gi-Oh: The Best Winged Beast Monster Cards, Ranked

In this article, I’ll be ranking the best Winged Beast-type monsters from the original series of Magic: The Gathering, as their return in the Duel Masters TCG was a highly anticipated moment for longtime fans. I’ll also be using this article as an opportunity to look back at the most powerful cards for the original TCG, and which ones have influenced the current TCG, and vice versa.

In the present day, the best way to determine how good a new creature card is is to see how often it is played in standard, how the community rates it and whether it is a card that will be played or not. However, if you want to be a completist, you do need to take into consideration all the meta and just pick the card that the most people have in their deck. So, in order to make this list, I have done so. I have taken every Winged Beast card that is currently played in standard and sorted them into four categories:

It was a tale of two decks in this week’s top 10. While we can’t all be as lucky as YUZU, our Top 10 has a few more entries from the usual suspects. With the release of Destiny’s new expansion, “The Taken King”, comes new and exciting ways to play the game. This week we’re looking at some of the new, and some of the old, to see which cards are worth your hard-earned gold.

Winged Beasts have encountered a slew of very strong archetypes.

From Harpies in the original series, who had consistently strong attack numbers and several excellent methods to reliably special summon, to Blackwings in the 5ds period, who shattered synchro summoning as we know it!

If you’re playing a Winged Beast deck and want to add some punch to your approach, this list will assist.

15. Vortex the Whirlwind

Vortex the Whirlwind Yu-Gi-Oh Card

While a 2100 attack synchro monster may not seem spectacular, it is an excellent method to start your combinations!

When it’s destroyed in combat, you may call any level 4 or lower Winged-beast monster from the deck as a special summon.

This implies that all you have to do is fight a monster that is stronger than this one to obtain the precise cards you need on the field.

Any play style may benefit from special summoning monsters from the deck.

It means you don’t have to wait for the appropriate cards to appear on the battlefield; instead, you may summon them whenever you need them.

14. Fire King High Avatar Garunix

Fire King High Avatar Garunix YGO Card

This man reminds me of a phoenix:

When he is killed by a card effect, he returns stronger and more vengeful than before!

It returns to the field during the following standby phase after being killed this manner, and when it does, it blows up every other monster on the field.

This is an excellent way to add some removal to your deck.

It may eliminate a large number of creatures at once, leaving your opponent helpless.

While this does kill your other creatures as well, it does so in the Fire King’s favor.

When the Fire King monsters are killed by a card effect, they acquire different benefits, and this annihilation may potentially be the start of a deadly combo chain!

13. The Atmosphere

The Atmosphere Yu-Gi-Oh Card

This card seems to be strong based on its effects and strength alone, and it’s fortunate that its effect backs up this assertion.

It can’t be summoned normally; instead, you must special summon it by banishing two monsters you control and one monster from your graveyard.

It’s not difficult to pull off since you’re losing the same amount of monsters as a tribute summon (plus an additional card from the grave).

You may also use an equip spell to attach a monster your opponent controls to this card while it’s on the field. If you do, this card gets a same amount of attack and defense as that monster, essentially absorbing it into itself.

There is no mountain too high with this effect: by absorbing the appropriate creatures, you can achieve extremely high attack numbers with this man.

12. Mist Valley Apex Avian

Mist Valley Apex Avian YGO Card

Due to its convenient level and excellent ability, this was a mainstay in pendulum decks for a long time (particularly when Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon was one of the finest pendulum monsters available).

When an effect card is triggered, you may negate and destroy it by returning this card (or any other Mist Valley card) from your field to your hand.

With pendulum creatures around, this was extremely strong.

Simply pendulum summon this guy the next round, and you’ll have a free negate card on the field every time.

11. Raidraptor – Final Fortress Falcon

Raidraptor - Final Fortress Falcon Yu-Gi-Oh Card

Raidraptors is an XYZ Winged Beast deck that makes extensive use of the Rank-up mechanics introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal!

This is only one of the insanely strong boss monsters they have.

It’s a rank 12 monster, but don’t worry, you won’t need to call three level 12 monsters to summon him. That would be an accomplishment in and of itself!

This archetype’s Rank-up cards are used to summon it, and this man is quite simple to summon with them.

When this guy kills a monster in battle with a staggering 3800 attack, you may detach a material from this card to let it to strike again.

You may execute this up to times each turn, putting a lot of pressure on your opponent to resist.

10. Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow

Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow YGO Card

You’ll know how strong these guys were if you played Yu-Gi-Oh at the time they were released.

Blackwings were so powerful that they had several cards on the banned list at one time. Even now, there are certain cards that are just too excellent to be used in competitive play!

Kalut spent some time on the banned list before being released.

It’s undoubtedly one of the greatest Blackwing cards available, simply because your opponent has few alternatives for dealing with it!

You may discard this card during the damage step to give a Blackwing monster 1400 attack.

Your opponent can’t activate cards that will negate the attack at this stage in the combat phase, so if you drop a Kalut on them, they’ll take the damage no matter what.

This additional burst of attack may be game-changing in a variety of situations, and it’s ideal for any Blackwing build!

9. Caligo Claw Crow

Caligo Claw Crow Yu-Gi-Oh Card

Caligo Claw Crow isn’t compatible with every Winged-beast deck.

Not only does it work well in Winged-beasts decks, but it also works well in other dark monster decks.

You may free special summon this man from your hand while you control a dark monster.

This is a one-time-use effect, so if you have another Caligo Claw Crow in your hand, you won’t be able to use both.

However, this is a great method to have more monsters on your field to summon with, whether it’s tribute, link, synchro, or whatever summon you want.

The stronger your monsters are, and therefore the greater your chances of destroying your opponent are, the more monsters from the additional deck you may call.

8. Earthbound Immortal Aslla Piscu

Earthbound Immortal Aslla Piscu YGO Card

The Earthbound Immortals are an archetype that may either be loved or despised.

They’re very strong, with the ability to strike your opponent directly and extremely high attack numbers, but they’re also rather fragile:

They immediately blow themselves up if there isn’t a field spell on the field.

My favorite Earthbound Immortal is Aslla Piscu, since after it leaves the field, you may kill every monster your opponent controls, then deal 800 damage to each of them.

You’re looking at 4800 damage right there if your opponent has a complete board (assuming they’ve also used one additional monster zone).

This alone can end games in a hurry, given that this person can already do a lot of damage by striking straight.

And if you have space in your winged beast deck for a tribute summon, this is the one I’d choose.

7. Mist Valley Soldier

Mist Valley Soldier Yu-Gi-Oh Card

In Yu-Gi-Oh, level 4 tuners are very valuable.

Because level 4 is the most frequent level for a non-tuner monster in the game, possessing these level 4 tuners makes synchro summoning for level 8 extremely simple.

Level 8 monsters are also some of the strongest synchro monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh:

All three candidates, Stardust Dragon, Red Dragon Archfiend, and Thought Ruler Archfiend, are excellent contenders that can easily win you games.

The effect of this card, on the other hand, is very excellent, since it allows any monster that fought this card and wasn’t destroyed by combat to be restored to the hand.

This is useful for removing creatures who can’t be defeated in combat, such as Spirit Reaper, who would otherwise act as a protective wall for your opponent.

6. D.D. Crow

D.D. Crow YGO Card

As Yu-Gi-Oh has evolved, the graveyard’s function has changed dramatically.

It was formerly used to store cards that had been spent, such as spells and traps, or creatures that had been vanquished in combat.

It now functions as a second hand, with players having frequent access to cards and effects. This isn’t because of any rule changes; it’s just because there are now a lot more cards that can special summon things from the graveyard.

D.D. Crow puts an end to your opponent’s graveyard strategy.

You can use it to banish a card from your opponent’s graveyard with fast effect speed, meaning they won’t be able to special summon it back very soon.

This card would fit into any side deck, Winged-Beast or not.

D.D. Crow is the ideal card to totally shut down your opponent’s graveyard-heavy strategy in a flash if they are using it.

5. Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds

Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds Yu-Gi-Oh Card

Floodgates are an excellent method to keep your opponent at bay.

A floodgate is a persistent card effect that prevents one or both players from doing a certain action throughout the game. This may be special summoning or drawing; Yu-Gi-Oh! has a floodgate for everything!

With the exception of wind monsters, the Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds prohibits both players from special summoning monsters.

Wind monsters make up the majority of flying beast monsters. As a result, this Barrier Statue is an excellent method to keep your opponent’s special summons at bay while allowing your deck to burst off as much as possible.

These Barrier Statues are also a really cheap method to add floodgates to your deck if you’re a budget player like myself.

They were all reissued as rares in the Maximum Gold set lately, so they’re still reasonably priced as of this writing.

4. Shinobaron Peacock

Shinobaron Peacock YGO Card

Shinobirds are one of Yu-Gi-most Oh’s unusual archetypes in recent years.

They’re an archetype of spirit monsters that specialize in ritual summoning, which has never been done before!

Spirit monsters are summoned monsters that all return to their controllers’ hands at the conclusion of the summoning phase.

This typically results in some ridiculously botched effects, and this is no exception!

When this card is ritual summoned, you may return to your opponent’s hand three monsters they control — that’s three Compulsory Evacuation Devices in one strong monster!

If you can get rid of any excess deck monsters in this way, you’ll earn a lot of value since your opponent will have to summon them all over again.

You may then summon a spirit monster from your hand for free, regardless of its summoning requirements, perfectly positioning yourself to sweep your opponent out of the game.

3. Genex Ally Birdman

Genex Ally Birdman Yu-Gi-Oh Card

This guy isn’t only one of the finest Winged Beasts around; he’s also one of the best tuner monsters.

And it’s very simple to do so:

All you have to do is return one of your other monsters to your hand, and you’ll be able to special summon this guy for free.

When you add in the fact that he’s a level 3 hand, you’ve got some real power on your hands.

In fact, Genex Ally Birdman is such a strong tuner monster that both the OCG and the TCG restrict it to one copy per deck.

If you’re wanting to add some synchro tactics to your Winged Beast deck, this guy is a great choice for your tuner.

2. Raiza the Storm Monarch

Raiza the Storm Monarch YGO Card

For as long as Yu-Gi-Oh has existed, monarchs have been strong cards.

When the Monarch structure deck was first launched in 2016, they dominated the metagame, and from roughly 2007 to 2010, there wasn’t a single competitive deck that didn’t attempt to harness their strength.

Raiza is one of the group’s most strong members.

You may target any card on the field and place it on top of its owner’s deck when it’s typically summoned.

This effect not only removes some strong cards from the field, but it also guarantees that your opponent’s next draw will not be anything unexpected.

You already know what they’re going to draw, so you can spend the remainder of your turn to prepare!

The fact that he can be summoned for just one tribute makes him a valuable asset to any Winged Beast deck.

1. Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer

Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer Yu-Gi-Oh Card

In Yu-Gi-Oh, the greatest monsters are the ones with insane effects that are extremely simple to summon.

Castel the Skyblaster Musketeer fulfills both of these requirements!

It’s a generic rank 4 XYZ monster, which means you just need two level 4 monsters on the field to summon him.

This is so simple to do for so many decks that it only takes one regular summon and one special summon. It doesn’t get much simpler than this.

And here’s how it works:

You may shuffle any face-up card on the field into the deck by removing 2 materials from this card.

This is fantastic for getting rid of your opponent’s strong creatures.

Unlike other removal effects, which typically kill the creature, Castel returned it to the deck, making it inaccessible until it was drawn again.

Castel can also turn any face-up monster into a face-down defensive monster, which is useful if your opponent possesses monsters with high attack but low defense stats.

Because of Castel, they are simple to run over (even with your weak monsters), leaving your opponent unprotected.

If you play a game such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, you’re probably familiar with the Winged-Beast monsters. They’re really fun to play, with epic effects like returning to the hand from the graveyard. But many people are intimidated by the thought of playing them, so that they’d rather play a main-deck Monster Card Zombyra the Dark, and play up as if you were playing a non-Winged-Beast card. Well, here’s something that may solve that problem for you: a list of the best Winged-Beast monsters, in ascending order.. Read more about yugioh winged beast xyz and let us know what you think.
