The Best Pokémon Professors From All Main Games (Ranked)

Want to relive your childhood with a fun Pokémon game? Then check out these Pokémon professors from the past! Here is a list of the best of the best, ranked by their Pokémon knowledge and how fun they are to play as. Let us know if a particular professor you would have added or removed from this list!

Professor Oak isn’t the only Pokémon professor in the world. He’s the only one you’ve got direct contact with, though. To make up for this, we rank all the professors. These rankings are based on four factors: how good their Pokémon are, how useful they are, how unique their Pokémon are, and how useful their abilities are.

Here’s a list of the best Pokémon professors that have appeared in all the main games. There are a lot of professors in Pokémon, so I’ve limited the list to those who have appeared at least once. I left out the three professors in the games that you can’t battle, since they’re irrelevant to this list.

Pokemon Teachers.

They are in every game, but not many people think about what these guys are all about.

I mean, just their presence proves the existence of an academic and scientific industry in the Pokemon world.

Is there any physics? Chemistry? Could we see a Pokemon nuclear holocaust?

The sky’s the limit, people!

And I’ve compiled the best Pokémon teachers from all the games into an easy-to-read list. That’s why you won’t find pseudo-scientific potboilers like Colress here.

It’s just an old-fashioned tree-hugging family of nerds.

9. Professor Elm

The only thing more tragic than Professor Elm’s oblivion is the ever-thinning of his hair.

This guy has a forehead that would make my girlfriend’s forehead look small.

Maybe it’s just my opinion, because I’ve never liked Yohto.

But Elm is the only teacher of the nine that I can’t remember.

In fact, I only remember Mr. Pokemon in Elm, and it shouldn’t be.

He also studies the evolution and reproduction of Pokémon.

I don’t know about you, but I have trouble with the idea that this person would see Pokémon mate, take notes, and then watch the offspring grow up and develop.

So maybe it’s not that you don’t remember Elm. It’s more like my brain is trying to fight the trauma.

8. Professor Magnolia

Magnolia is a bit of a bad factor, let’s face it.

She’s only in the game so her protégé can force an early retirement.

Not that she learned anything interesting or cool. Because he specializes only in the Dynamax phenomenon, something unique to Galar.

Come to think of it, it’s kind of tragic that Magnolia has to retire with totally untransferable skills.

We see Oak leading workshops in various areas, helping with research, etc., but Magnolia has nothing to offer the scientific community outside of Galar.

His life’s work was (dare I say it) unnecessary.

7. Professor Sycamore

The proportions of Professor Sycamore’s body make me uncomfortable.

I mean, there’s nothing weird about him, he’s just tall and skinny.

But I’m short and round, so this look is weird for me.

I know I gave Magnolia a pass to specialize in Dynamax, but I’m a hypocrite.

I say this because Sycamore specializes in Mega Evolutions, which are infinitely cooler than Dynamax Pokémon.

He then sends his two sidekicks to the villains’ hideout to discover their plans.

It doesn’t sound very ethical, but apparently there are no health and safety laws in Kalos.

6. Professor Birch

Professor Birch is my friend!

There is a striking resemblance between him and me, although you would never see me in shorts and sandals.

Of all the Pokémon teachers in the series, Birch is perhaps the most legitimate, as he studies habitat.

This is real science. No Pokemon evolution or Dynamax nonsense (I’m not a creationist, I’m just saying that’s not how real evolution works).

Burch is not only a great scientist, but also a great family man.

He often goes out with his child (your rival) to watch and catch Pokémon, while his wife worries a lot at home. Isn’t that great?

5. Professor Kukui

Professor Kukui shouldn’t look like that.

This guy’s got abs. This is not normal.

If that’s not enough, he’s also a masked professional wrestler.

It’s like Jushin Thunder Liger getting a degree in physics.

And not only that: Kukui is also a visionary.

He is the founder of the Alolan Pokémon League and also its first champion.

In other words: Kukui’s resume looks something like this:

  • Professional wrestler.
  • A qualified teacher
  • Founder of the Pokémon Alolan League
  • The first Alolan champion
  • To a press

4. Professor Rowan

If I live to be as old as Professor Rowan, I shall be a very happy old man.

To be perfectly honest, one of the main reasons I gave Rowan such a high rating is that I’m very happy we’re finally getting a Gen IV remake.

Not to mention the chibi art style. You can’t tell me that the idea of returning to Sinnoh didn’t excite you like a schoolgirl.

If I’m doing mental gymnastics, that means I’m also looking forward to Rowan. So he has points on my list, even though he only studies Pokémon evolutions (and is much better and less scary than Elm).

3. Professor Sonia

It’s not really right to call Sonya a teacher, but that’s the way it is.

She doesn’t get that title until after SWSH, and she doesn’t get promoted for it.

The title of doctor in the Pokémon world seems too easy to obtain…..

But she’s less of a scholar than a historian, and I like that.

Not only because the history of Pokemon has been ignored for too long, but also because it’s time to show that other educational disciplines are actively used in games.

For Gen IX, I want a professor of English literature. And I’ll be disappointed if I don’t get it.

2. Professor Juniper

Technically, Juniper was the first historian to make a name for herself, not Sonja.

But she studies the origins of Pokémon. So it’s not exactly the same.

I admit that Juniper’s high ranking is entirely due to my personal bias.

Gen V is my favorite of SWSH, and… Well, uh… Let’s just say juniper is particularly itchy. Hey, don’t judge! Let me handle this.

1. Professor Oak

Let’s face it:

There was no other Pokémon professor to take the place.

Not just because it’s OG, or for nostalgia, or because it keeps popping up in other games, no, those are side issues.

He really is, because he has an impressive sense of style.

Oak is known around the world for his research into the relationship between Pokemon and humans, which just… And since Pokemon are trained to fight as a sport, I can imagine his research going awry.

But he also comes from a family of distinguished scientists.

He has a cousin (not sure if it’s Oak in disguise) going to Alola, but he gets distracted by the natural force Kukui.

Add all these factors together and you can understand why Professor Oak has become so legendary.

I could even write an entire gibberish for this record and it would still justify dub being number one.

And he would have broken Ash’s mother.

This alone is far more impressive than what the others have done. The most popular Pokémon games are the ones that feature Professor Oak, the Pokémon expert from the anime series. Newer games have included him in the storyline, but old games have included him as a professor as well, and everyone knows he’s one of the best teachers there is. So, we decided to give you the low down on the best of them, and rank them from best to worst..
