The history of the Middle East is one of the most fascinating of all, and the Medieval period was no different. This time period saw the rise of the mighty Mongol empire, which swept across Asia and Europe, and would eventually come to mark the end of the Middle Ages. But in between these two historical epochs, the region was ruled by a number of powerful dynasties, each with their own region to rule and territory to expand. Stronghold Warlords aims to bring all of these factions to life, through detailed and historically accurate mods for the Total War games.
The warlords of medieval Asia were known for their strength and martial skill. They were the last obstacle between the Mongols and the rest of the world. But they were not the only warlord of this period – the Japanese Samurai also stood their own.
REVIEW– This time the fort: Warlords takes us back to the bloody Asian Middle Ages, where for the first time in the series’ history we can subdue and control the Overlords under our command, led by artificial intelligences. We spent a week and a half playing wheelchair warriors in the latest installment of the real-time strategy game series.
The genre RTS (real-time strategy game), which was once very popular on the PC, is now also becoming less and less common on the computer. While the genre hasn’t completely disappeared, it has certainly become a bit repetitive, and far fewer triple-A level games are being released, so fans should appreciate more challenging work. Again, this is nothing new for Firefly Studios: 2001 saw the release of the first instalment of the Stronghold series, which saw us don the bloody, dented armour of a medieval warlord for the first time. In the five episodes released so far, we have commanded armies in medieval Europe, and Stronghold Warlords is the first episode to deal with Asia from the same period.
In Warlords, we take control of Mongol hordes, Chinese imperial warriors and samurai, storming Japanese castles and fortified Chinese cities. To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of the Stronghold series, but I played a lot of the Age of Empires series and the city building games that were popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s (Ceasar, Pharaoh, Zeus: Master of Olympus, Emperor, etc.). Ultimately, the Stronghold games take a lot of elements from both of these franchises, so I was able to throw myself into the medieval wars of Stronghold Warlords pretty quickly and without any problems.
Rogue Lords, Dogs of Wales
A new feature in the game is that you can persuade (enslave) neutral lords to serve the warlord you control. Once we invade with our armies the small fortress they are standing on, they will literally kneel before us if we are on their side with our soldiers. After that, they come under our control: They can be upgraded, not only gaining respect but also various resources, and even used to reinforce borders and conduct various operations. It looks great, and in fact the minion system is a very special part of Stronghold Warlords, but a little more character, personality or uniqueness would be nice for these minions.
After all, the Anglo-Saxon and Norman lords had their own particularities in 1986’s Defender of the Crown, and here they are merely on the map, waiting to be conquered and then commandeered – and guarded like the apple of your eye, or else the enemy will turn on you. While the warlord we lead is constantly giving pep talks in short transitions (and isn’t very serious), these warlords are stupid and have no character of their own – it’s kind of a failed thing.

The gameplay of Stronghold Warlords is roughly based on the two franchises mentioned above: You have to build various economic, military and diplomatic buildings (if you have enough gold and resources), which you then use to produce food and gold – both of which are needed for war, as we know from our historical research. The developers have tried to diversify the food a bit, like in the old Impressions games (Ceasar, Pharaoh, Zeus, etc.), but it doesn’t work as logically here, and it’s not clear, for example, why it’s better to have a vegetable farm and a pig farm next to the main rice farm. Sure, the game tells us that it makes the farmers feel better, but otherwise the role of the various foods in the game is not very refined or understandable.
During the campaign, our enemies will not leave us alone for long, and we must be well prepared for attacks, or we will be severely defeated. It is a good idea to set up an effective defensive and offensive army as soon as possible: the former to defend against surprise attacks on the center, the latter to subdue the warlords as quickly as possible. If not, the enemy will come, and if the hitherto neutral vassals surrender to him, it will be even more difficult to turn the tide in our favor. Since we are in Asia and gunpowder is a well-known Chinese invention, we can also use and deploy new siege weapons with gunpowder.
It’s worth keeping an eye on them (and destroying enemy weapons as quickly as possible), as they can cause significant damage to the regular army of mêlée fighters and archers, as well as defensive walls. Another tactical innovation is the use of fire wagons, with which you can easily deal with the archers on the ramparts, while in the previous series this was much more difficult. The developers are particularly proud of this feature. Finally, it is worth building several fortress walls as soon as possible, as they can make a large siege much more difficult.
Maybe I’m getting older and less able to play these kinds of games, but the various Age of Empires, or the city-building series, or the yet-unnamed Total War series, were somehow a bit more engaging, and a bit more logical and fluid in the whirlwind of military and economic events. Total War, for example, is a master of army management, Caesar of Pharaoh of economy, and the two are brilliantly combined in the Age of Empires episodes. Compared to all of these games, Stronghold Warlords as a whole lags a bit behind, even though the minion aspect is a relative novelty in real-time strategy games. -Zardoz-
