Oh boy, the Nintendo Switch is finally here!

It’s a system that has the potential to fulfill the needs of many gamers, not just the ones that are in the console market. It’s a system that has taken the market by storm, and has been one of the best-selling products of the year. With the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has introduced a new concept to the gaming world: a hybrid system that can play both on a big screen and on a handheld screen, something no previous Nintendo console has ever been able to do.

Without warning, Nintendo has decided to announce the news about the next iteration of the Switch. We’ve been hearing rumors about the Nintendo Switch Pro for years, with supposedly improved performance and even the ability to display 4K images. The latest rumor confirmed everything except the performance boost that most people were probably waiting for the most. So let’s dive into the details of what the new Switch offers – and, perhaps more importantly, what it doesn’t offer.
Nintendo announced today that the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) will be released on the same day as Metroid Dread, October 8. 2021. The system will come in two configurations: with white Joy-Con controllers and a white dock, and with neon/red/blue Joy-Con controllers and a black dock. The biggest upgrade is the larger 7″ screen (compared to the 6.2″ screen of the original Switch). Thanks to the OLED screen, this display will have better color reproduction and saturation. A larger, more stable kickstand on the back makes gaming on the system in desktop mode more comfortable than ever, and the Switch Dock removes one of the USB ports and replaces it with an Ethernet port for wired internet access, which should appeal to online gamers. It offers twice the storage space – 64GB instead of 32GB – and enhanced audio on the go. The new OLED model costs $50 more than the original, or $349.99. And that’s it.
The unveiling of this product shows how damaging rumors can be, as expectations can be much higher than they would otherwise be. Most rumors have focused on the new Switch’s supposed performance boost, allowing it to offer smoother frame rates and even 4K graphics. Interestingly, with most of the rumors, all other details were true, but there was no mention of a better processor/GPU. Of course, plans are still subject to change, and some speculate that a lack of chips could be the reason Nintendo chose this route over the more powerful version of the Switch. Of course, it may turn out that the release of the improved system was never planned and that the rumors were always wrong. Or maybe there’s still a chance Nintendo will release this Pro model next year? Who knows, but it’s clear that many Nintendo fans were disappointed by today’s announcement.
It’s a bit odd that we have the $199 Switch Lite, which is aimed at the portable gaming market, and now we have the more expensive Switch (OLED model), which is also aimed at the portable gaming market. If you play your Switch primarily on your TV, then you don’t have much incentive to buy this new product. A bigger and better screen, as well as more powerful support and better sound, won’t change the way you play games on your TV. It would be nice if Nintendo could get console gamers on board (remember how Nintendo insisted at launch that the Switch was a console, not a handheld? Still, it’s a great option for gamers on the go, and for potential new buyers.

Personally, I’m very unhappy and disappointed with what’s being offered here, but I’ll probably end up upgrading anyway since I have just about every variant of Nintendo hardware, especially if I can get $250 or more for my existing Switch via trade-in. I’m also a big fan of the white Joy-Con controllers and dock, but damn if I don’t want a little performance boost to make some of my Switch games run a little smoother and look better on my 4K TV.
