The PlayDate Gaming Device is a brand new product for the Australia market, but is available in the United States. It’s a gaming device that works over bluetooth to connect to your smart phone, tablet, or other device. It has two ways to play, and can work with up to three devices at a time. Today the Panic editor welcomed the first Live Playdate update. The presentation was a pre-recorded video with lots of details about the company’s upcoming device. A lot has happened since the announcement of the Playdate, and in this article we’ve gathered all the news you need to know about the latest 2021 handheld device.
When will it be available and how much will it cost?
Playdate has no release date yet. However, Panic said that pre-orders for the device will begin in July. You’ll have to pay $179 for the device alone, but that amount includes the first season of play. This season, you get 24 games over 12 weeks.
Playdate Stereo Dock

The first big news of the presentation is the Playdate stereo dock. This device is the first accessory for Playdate. There’s no price or release date yet, but it will likely be available for pre-order along with the main device. This accessory is a speaker for Playdate that also charges your console, plays music through a dedicated app, has two pen holders, and serves as a docking station for Playdate when you’re not using it.

When Playdate was first announced, Panic said the device would have new games based on the season. They provide twelve games each, one per week, and they are downloaded directly to the console via Wi-Fi. The first season has now changed, and Panic is offering double the number of starts, meaning you get two games a week in this first season. All this is also included in the purchase price.

Playdate Pulp allows anyone to create a game in their browser

In the playdate, Panic said it should be possible for anyone to develop a game for the device, not just experienced developers. To that end, the company will release a web development kit called Playdate Pulp. It’s inspired by development kits like Bitsy, which allow anyone to easily create a small game with a unique story. Playdate Pulp allows anyone to create a game, create illustrations, create music and code it all using a simple scripting language. The whole thing will be available for free in 2021, but there’s no word yet on when you’ll be able to create your own games for Playdate.

Finally, Lucas Pope, the developer of Return of the Obra Dinn, is making a game for Playdate. It’s called Mars After Midnight, and it looks like players are consulting monsters in an alien world.
