Retro-gaming has always been about re-experiencing an experience that had once happened in the past. The intent of these retro-releases are to recreate that experience by providing the same graphics and sound that accompanied the release of the game when it was first released.

The world of gaming is a strange and mysterious place. It can be filled with the bright lights of modern gaming, or a dark place where gamers can lose themselves in the past. One place where gamers can lose themselves in the past is when they play the original Fallout games. For many players the original Fallout games are a favorite, and that is why they were made into a movie.

RETRO – The rotting zombie, the alien demon or Jack Nicholson with an axe are nothing compared to this little undead girl in this game! In Monolith’s latest FPS, we have to go through several levels to find out what this not-so-nice kid wants us to do…

Mysterious, scary, sinister – adjectives with which FPS creators have always liked to associate their games. Of course there have been other styles, but the most popular and well-known have always been set in abandoned space bases (Doom, Half Life), in ancient castles with ghosts (Undying), or in other places where the scariest monsters could be torn apart at any time. This time around, F.E.A.R.’s action takes place in less haunted places, but in creepier situations. Our main enemy is a madman who manages to brainwash the masses of various commands, but most terrifying is the little girl who is always hiding behind us and causing terrible visions at the most unexpected times. As you and your elite commando hero fight your way through masses of enemy soldiers in a traditional FPS, the horrors surrounding the little girl slowly become clear.

No steam, stay cool!

So at the end of this article, the only question left is whether F.E.A.R. is a revolutionary game or yet another horror FPS. If we limit ourselves to the technical execution, Monolith has, as always, delivered first-rate work: The graphics engine is revolutionary and can rival Doom 3 or Half-Life 2, despite the minor flaws and sloppiness mentioned above.

As far as gameplay goes, there’s not much new: There aren’t many changes, and at times the game runs out of steam, like in Doom 3, only to pick up speed towards the end.

I already talked about bullying: I think Monolith could work on this project if they weren’t so comfortable with it. The use of the little girl is very stylized, but maybe because she’s been in so many horror movies lately, I didn’t really notice.

What sets F.E.A.R. apart from the rest of the FPSs is its excellent artificial intelligence and well-crafted story – something the other big players (Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2) didn’t do so well. So I recommend (also) all FPS fans to check out Monolith’s Last Star, because there are some surprises at the end of the story…
