Countering Pokemon in Battle

Having an effective counter to a Pokemon can make all the difference in battle, given that it is one of the most important parts of team building. The definition of what makes something a counter varies from person to person, but some users on Smogon have found success in creating unique and effective counters for every metagame mon. This article will explore some of the most common counters used in each metagame, and hopefully provide players with ideas for future team building.

Bronzong has a handful of viable partners it can synergize with. Heatran is one common partner that Bronzong fits perfectly with because they resist each other’s weaknesses and provide perfect type synergy.

The first metagame in which we will examine counters is OU. While there are many Pokemon that can usefully counter most of the Uber tier, some stand out more than others when it comes to countering everything it has to offer. For example, Bronzong stands tall as an almost perfect counter to Heatran, Magnezone, and Tyranitar, all at the same time! On top of that it can also serve as an effective check to many other threats like Nidoking, Starmie, and Breloom. Unfortunately for Bronzong, its weaknesses to common OU assaults in Fighting- and Ground-type attacks leave it struggling against Scizor, Terrakion, and Landorus, so it is not perfect.

Because of this, Bronzong has a handful of viable partners it can synergize with. In addition to stopping Flying-types from ruining your fun, Slowbro makes an excellent answer to Breloom and Venusaur, which can handle Scizor and Terrakion just fine. Slowbro also has Regenerator to continuously restore its health throughout the match, so switching in and out is less of a concern for it.

Some other common Pokemon with similar uses in OU tier are Forretress and Skarmory. They synergize well as a defensive core, since both can take Fighting-type attacks with ease. In addition, they each cover the others’ weaknesses perfectly, as Skarmory takes Electric-type moves for Forretress and resists Flying-type moves in return, while Forretress takes Fire-type attacks for Skarmory and has the bulk to take on physical attackers.

Another common example of a defensive core that is often seen in competitive play is Slowbro + Jirachi. Slowbro stops bulky Water-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokemon from tearing through your team, while Jirachi takes out big Fire- and Electric-type threats. If going with a more offensive approach, Scizor can fill a similar role to Skarmory and Forretress by providing reliable defense against the many powerful physical attackers of OU.

In Ubers, one of the best counters for Mewtwo is Lugia, as it takes less than 50% damage from all of Mewtwo’s attacks and can OHKO back with either a STAB Psychic or a Brave Bird. Both Latias and Ho-Oh make decent Mewtwo counters as well because they each resist a STAB move and can survive a Psychic. Lugia also handles Deoxys-A quite well, as it takes less than 50% from every attack except Psycho Boost, which only has a 20% chance to even 2HKO.

Other Pokemon that work well against Mewtwo are Weavile and Tyranitar, the former of which can revenge kill it with a powerful Ice Punch, while the latter can take all of Mewtwo’s attacks and OHKO back with a STAB Stone Edge or Fire Blast. Latios makes a decent check as well because it outspeeds Mewtwo and can KO back with any one of its moves.

Conclusion

While this may be a rather lengthy read, hopefully it will provide new ideas on how to counter common threats in the current metagame. Keep an eye out for future articles of the same nature, as I plan to examine each tier’s most common Pokemon and how they fare against one another. Stay tuned!
